Coastline News SAC Students take a life changing trip to Africa

11 April 2008

Realizing How Similar Students are Worlds Apart

Twenty hours on a plane and three hours on a bus separated speculation from reality. And after several days in Nkandla, South Africa, three members of Coastline Community College’s Student Advisory Committee (SAC) came back with a realization that students in this small, underprivileged rural city share many of the same hopes and dreams as their counterparts in the U.S.

SAC students Chelsea Svir, Justin Brown, and Darlene Rose realized that continents apart didn’t separate the special bond formed between one’s dreams and education.

Photobucket
SAC students spend a few minutes during lunch learning the local dance moves.

Nkandla students’ dream of performing microscopic procedures as surgeons, they envision building gigantic cities as engineers, and are passionate about developing software as computer programmers.

One particular school known as Velangaye High School has students coming from across the country to attend this reputable school which has produced more than 40 doctors since it’s opening in 1998.

Photobucket
Students at the Velangaye High School are passionate about education.

“The students (Velangaye School) here are serious about their education,” said Chelsea Svir, current SAC president. “Classrooms are jammed packed and some students have to stand for hours-upon-hours if they want to learn.”

This life-changing experience for the members of SAC is the result of a relationship which has blossomed from the initial courting of previous SAC members more than five years ago.

In 2003 after watching a BBC Documentary entitled, The Orphans of Nkandla, Coastline’s SAC members knew then that they wanted to get involved with a cause known as The Africa Project.

SAC has since then created events to raise funds for The Africa Project, knowing that 100% of what they raised would go directly to the high schools of Nkandla.

In December of 2007 SAC had their first face-to-face experience with representatives from Nkandla as the principal of Velangaye School, Mr. Ngogi Mahaye, visited Coastline with a recently-graduated member of Velangaye Student Council. Their trip sparked an intimate conversation with several of Coastline’s Coastline faculty and staff.

That same month Coastline faculty and staff members formed a holiday card drive. Numerous of cards were exchanged with the kind words, “In honor of you this holiday season, I’ve donated to the African Project.”

The relationship came full circle as the SAC students had the opportunity to tour the Velangaye campus with Principle Mahaye. Along with delivering school supplies they also had a message to rely from Coastline President Dr. Ding-Jo Currie: “You can consider Coastline, a sister school, which will help solve enduring issues that face the Velangaye campus.”

Coastline News Coastline recognized as a leader in diverse education

Coastline recognized as a leader in diverse education

Coastline Community College has earned recognition for its offering of educational programs that support and promote diversity. The Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA) awarded Coastline with the “Progress in Diversity” award at a luncheon taking place as part of the group’s annual conference on Wednesday, February 20, 2008. The award was accepted by Coastline President, Dr. Ding-Jo H. Currie, in front of a crowd consisting of more than 300 fellow community college administrators from across the state.

On the significance of receiving the honorable award, Dr. Currie expressed, “I’m especially proud of this award. At Coastline we promote diversity because our college puts real action behind an institutional philosophy and practice of being all-inclusive and all-embracing. We live it every day at Coastline.”

Current ACCCA President, Michael Viera, seconded Currie’s statements as he told the audience of how Coastline has taken a proactive approach to creating diverse leadership training workshops and events, as evident in the creation of the Kaleidoscope Leadership Institute, Latino Youth Leadership Conference and this year’s inaugural African-American Male Summit.

At Coastline, Currie’s support for the development and administration of innovative programs has allowed the college to serve thousands of non-traditional students whom are not typically the main “target audience” of other community colleges. This includes the development of an extremely successful segment of the College’s distance learning program targeted specifically to members of the U.S. Military which garners approximately 25,000 enrollments a year, as well as an acclaimed Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Program which provides cognitive retraining to those who have suffered a brain injury.

“The community college system has the power to impact many groups—educationally, socially, economically and culturally—here in the United States and even worldwide,” explained Currie.

10 January 2008

Event open to administrators, faculty, staff and students

Coastline Community College, in partnership with African American Male Education Network and Development (A2MEND), will host its first annual “Critical Examination of Institutional Barriers in Community Colleges” summit for African-American Males on March 19 at Coastline’s Le-Jao Center.

This summit is intended for policy makers, trustees, administrators, superintendents, faculty and teachers, staff, and current students at colleges and high schools to come together and identify the barriers that African-American men face in community colleges today. The group will also discuss best practices and implementation strategies in order to improve African-American student retention and success.

Four different “strands” will take place on the same day– a student strand, an administrator strand, a faculty/instructional strand, and a student support services strand– each covering different topics of interest to those specific groups.

“This will be an excellent opportunity to collaborate and form effective strategies to eliminate unnecessary barriers African American males are currently facing,” said Dr. Shalamon Duke, Dean of Counseling and Special Programs at Coastline.

“Coastline has always worked to promote social equality and partnering up with A2MEND gives us a partner and an ally in our pursuit of changing the community college landscape for the betterment of African American students,” he continued.

The student registration fee for the African American Male Summit is just $20 and professional registration is $75. A portion of the registration fee will go toward the A2MEND scholarship fund.

For more information contact Dr. Shalamon Duke via email at SDuke@coastline.edu or by telephone (714) 241-6257. Information can also be found on the web site AA summit web site.

Coastline News Emeritus students gather for tea to celebrate lifelong learning

Emeritus students gather for tea to celebrate lifelong learning

Coastline Community College hosted a tea party for Emeritus students at its Westminster campus on Tuesday, December 11, 2007. Emeritus students are those students that are age 55 and older taking classes at Coastline for physical fitness, personal enrichment, or for pure social enjoyment.

Although the average age of students in Coastline’s Emeritus program is 74 years old, there are some extraordinary students that still believe in lifelong learning even into their 100s.

Juanita Woodburn, one of Coastline’s eldest students, was awarded a certificate of recognition at the event by Coastline President Dr. Ding-Jo Currie and Coast District Trustee Mary Hornbuckle. When asked how old she was, Juanita answered, “In two weeks and one day, I will be 103.”

Accompanied at the podium by her caregiver Eva, Juanita joked about the benefits of getting old, including the luxury of taking a nap everyday. “If I wasn’t here right now, I’d probably be in bed,” she remarked. Juanita also reminisced about all of the classes she had taken at Coastline Community College and credited those classes with keeping her young. Juanita is currently enrolled in an exercise course taught by Coastline at the Huntington Landmark Senior Living Community in Huntington Beach. “I want to thank the college for having these classes,” she said to President Currie and to the crowd, “and I hope you never give up…as long as I live anyway!”

The annual Emeritus Tea was attended by nearly 100 seniors from various cities within the Coast Community College District. As a special feature, tea was poured by women dressed in Victorian-era costumes—members of the Victorian Tea Society of the Centennial Heritage Museum in Santa Ana.

Several Emeritus courses are slated to begin at the start of Coastline’s spring 2008 semester, which starts January 28, 2008. Most classes are free to seniors age 55 and over, and classes are taught at senior centers, community centers, assisted living facilities, and other locations as well as on Coastline’s main campuses. For more information on Emeritus courses, please call (714) 241-6213.

Coastline News Coastline working to give rise to the virtual campus

Coastline working to give rise to the virtual campus

Imagine a college campus without walls or any physical boundaries. It’s a campus where students can meet, congregate, and communicate from the comfort of their own home, from any country, worldwide. Coastline Community College is imagining that virtual campus right now, and developers in the college’s Instructional Systems Development (ISD) team are quickly working to bring it to the masses.

As a leader in technology-assisted learning, Coastline has long been conceptualizing the idea of a virtual campus. In this type of environment, students would enter into a 3D computer-generated campus using an “avatar” they customize to their likeness. An avatar is an Internet user's representation of himself or herself (usually seen in computer gaming). Students would then be able to move their avatar around their virtual campuses to virtually explore places like the college library, the student lounge, and even digital classrooms where they would be able to learn and communicate with other avatars visiting the same places on campus.

Coastline’s ISD team debuted this new virtual college technology at their open-house celebration on Friday, October 19. The open house was in celebration of their recent move to a new, state-of-the-art location more suited for e-dreaming. The center, located at 10200 Slater Avenue in Fountain Valley, is officially called The Center for Instructional Systems Development.

“We’re excited and thrilled to be leading the efforts in revolutionizing the way education is presented,” said Dan Jones, Executive Dean, ISD. “We have an intelligent and dedicated group of developers, who will revolutionize our concept of education.”

Dr. Ted Boehler, Dean Innovation and Learning Technologies in ISD, estimates that the virtual college environment and virtual world for learning will be the norm in ten years. Coastline hopes to launch it’s virtual college environment over the next two years.

Coastline News Photography exhibition to open October 31 at Coastline Art Gallery

17 October 2007

The Coastline Art Gallery will open its first photography exhibition, entitled Streets, on October 31. The exhibit is a portrayal of roads and streets which have intersected the lives of each featured artist, and includes both color and black and white photographs showcasing streets scenes from around the world.

The exhibition features contemporary photography by California and Orange County photographers including Tom Dowling, Lisa Dowling, Suzanne Jamieson, Jill Sattler, Mike Sage, Aviva Gray, Karen Bridges-Severin, Barbara Higgins, Morgan Thomas, Michael Johnson, and Amelia Cameron.

Photographer Karen Bridges-Severin of Huntington Beach credits Coastline Community College with helping her develop her skills as an artist. “After two years of studying art at Coastline Community College, I rediscovered photography as a medium for artistic expression,” says Bridges-Severin. “Preferring to walk instead of drive, I get the satisfaction of slowing life down and seeing things that most people wouldn’t. I always carry a camera to record a random thought or an object I see along the roadside,” she continued. Karen’s photographs explore both the subtleties of light and fleeting moments in time.

A special opening reception will be held on Friday, November 2, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. to kick off the exhibition. The reception, a forum where members of the local community can interact with the artists and preview the show, is free and open to the public.

The Coastline Art Gallery is located at 10156 Adams Ave. in Huntington Beach. Gallery hours during this exhibition are Wednesdays through Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission and parking are free. For more information, call (714) 963-8475 or visit http://www.coastline.edu/. Streets runs through November 21.

Students flocking to science courses at Coastline

This fall, Coastline is offering more than 60 sections of science classes and related labs. These classes span the subject areas of Biology, Human Anatomy, Human Physiology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Human Ecology, Geology, and beyond.

"Coastline has really grown in the sciences," expressed Coastline Director of Marketing and Public Relations, Michelle Ma. "The amazing thing is that every time we add more classes, they immediately fill up," she continued.

Coastline has recently added new science labs at their main centers, allowing the college to offer more advanced courses like Anatomy, Microbiology and Physiology. These courses are popular with students studying for careers in the medical field.

"There’s great demand for the subject of Anatomy because it’s required for any health care profession," stated the Chair of Natural Science, Randall Warwick. "At Coastline, we have excellent faculty who bring a depth of knowledge and experience to anatomy," he added.

Kim Gordon, who teaches Astronomy at Coastline, agrees with Professor Warwick. "Our program’s success is due to our quality instructors and Coastline’s commitment to providing transferable science courses which meet the GE science graduation requirements of the UC, CSU, and many other institutions of higher learning, all for incredibly low fees," he said.

American Association of Community Colleges led by Coastline President

On July 1, Coastline President Dr. Ding-Jo Currie assumed the role of newly elected chair of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) board of directors.

Founded in 1920, AACC has become the leading proponent and the national "voice for community colleges." The AACC board comprises 32 members: 26 elected by members of the association, and six elected by the board itself.

Dr. Currie has been involved in the California higher education system for more than 25 years. In addition to her leadership role at Coastline, Currie has years of leadership experience in and outside of academia.

"I am honored to serve in this capacity," said Currie about her position with AACC. "I want to make known the impact of the community college system educationally, socially, economically, and culturally here in the United States and even worldwide," she continued. "Other countries are now looking to us as a model."

In addition to her goal of enhancing the capacity of community colleges, Dr. Currie wants to help take AACC to the next level. She hopes to work with the AACC Board, staff and membership to build a stronger system for community college students nationwide.

P.E. classes at Coastline help you stay in shape for less

Are you looking for a way to stay in shape for less? Physical education classes at Coastline Community College may be the perfect answer to keeping your body slim and your wallet fat.

The college offers classes for all ages and physical conditions for only $20 a unit. If you’re part of the younger crowd or even just young at heart, join in on classes that really get your body moving including yoga, tai chi, pilates, strength conditioning, ballet, classical dance, jazz dance or tap dance. All are 0.5-unit or 1-unit courses starting the week of August 27th and continuing through December 16th.

“I enjoy taking dance classes at Coastline because it’s so fun, you don’t even know you’re exercising,” remarked Coastline student, Paula Purs. “The staff is wonderful and the class is challenging,” she continued.

For seniors age 55 and over, Coastline offers a variety of physical education courses tailored to older adults that meet their special needs or limitations. Offerings include adult fitness, aerobics, chair stretch, and even a chair-based tai chi class. Because Emeritus courses are 0-unit courses, participants pay nothing in unit fees (nominal college service fees may still apply). Better yet, these courses are offered at several sites throughout the Coast Community College District at locations such as senior centers and local community centers.

“To maximize convenience, Coastline has always offered courses at a number of neighborhood sites,” said Vice President of Instruction, Cheryl Babler. “Our Emeritus courses can be found on-site at Huntington Beach Landmark, Seal Beach Leisure World, and the Fountain Valley Senior Center to name a few.”

Pick up a copy of Coastline’s fall class schedule for details on any of these courses. The class schedule is available at main Coastline Learning Centers located in Westminster, Garden Grove, or Costa Mesa, and online at http://www.coastline.edu/. Interested students can also call the college directly at (714) 241-6176 for registration information.
